In the United States, anywhere from 400,000 to 500,000 people get dental crowns on a yearly basis. In 2018, the global market size for dental fillings was valued at over $5 billion and is expected to grow at a rate of over 7% per year from 2019 to 2026. Though both are popular ways to restore the look and function of your teeth, many people are unsure of the difference between dental crowns and fillings. Here are some of the distinctions between the two.
What is a Crown?
Crowns, also called caps, are usually made from porcelain or ceramic. While they are aesthetically pleasing, their primary purpose is to improve your mouth’s functionality. They are designed to fit over the patient’s entire tooth and can be useful when the part above the gum line is severely damaged, but the root is still worth saving. They don’t require additional care beyond brushing and flossing and can last up to fifteen years. Crowns can also be used for teeth that are broken, discolored, or are severely decayed.
What is a Filling?
A filling is a restorative treatment that involves replacing an area of a patient’s tooth that’s been affected by decay. They can be helpful in treating minor damage to the tooth such as small cavities and can be made from a variety of materials. Composite fillings, or tooth-colored fillings, have become more popular over the years and can last around 10 years. Unlike amalgam fillings, composite material doesn’t contain mercury or any other harmful metals.
What’s the Difference?
Fillings are direct restorations which means they can be completed in a single procedure and are used to correct minor or more easily fixable dental issues. Crowns are indirect restorations which means they typically involve two or more appointments to treat the problem and are more well-suited for serious issues. If you get CEREC Same Day Crowns, the procedure only takes one appointment to complete. By practicing good oral hygiene, you may be able to avoid needing a crown or filling all together.
If you are having issues with your teeth and think you may need one of these restorative treatments, make sure to book an appointment with your dentist. They will be able to evaluate your condition and determine which one is the best way to restore your smile!
