These Common Beverages Could Harm Your Oral Health

With summer here and record heat expected around the world, it’s more important than ever to stay hydrated. But what you drink matters more than you may think, especially when it comes to your oral health. Unfortunately, not all drinks are created equal. In fact, some beverages may cause more harm than good, and in some cases, significant damage. So, before you reach for that favorite drink, take a moment to “refresh” your knowledge about which liquids are bad for your teeth!

Acidic Drinks

Acidic drinks like wine, soda, citrus juices, and even coffee and tea are all popular favorites, but over time their acid content can erode your tooth enamel. But don’t despair- you don’t have to ditch that morning cup of joe. Just be sure to alternate your acidic drinks with sips of water, rinse your mouth with water after finishing, and brush your teeth about 30 minutes after that.

Waiting 30 minutes is important with acidic drinks, because the acid can cause your enamel to soften. By postponing brushing, you allow your enamel time to reharden, so you don’t damage your teeth with your toothbrush due to the softened enamel.

Sugary Drinks

When it comes to teeth, sugar is not your friend. Sugary drinks like sodas, juices, and flavored milk all feed the cavity-causing bacteria that lives in your mouth, increasing your risk of cavities and gum disease. Limit sugary beverages when possible and be sure to follow up with a glass of water to wash excess sugar off your teeth!

Dark Colored Drinks

Red wine, coffee, and cola may taste good, but they can also stain your teeth over time. If you do indulge in these options, make sure you drink water and then brush your teeth afterwards!

Other Tips and Tricks

Water is the best way to stay hydrated, and it’s also the safest beverage for your teeth, but enjoying a soda, juice, coffee, or alcoholic beverage from time to time isn’t a dealbreaker. Just be sure to remember these helpful tips and tricks to keep your mouth healthy while you drink!

  • Brush your teeth after drinking anything besides water. For acidic beverages, wait at least 30 minutes before brushing
  • Alternate sips of your drink with sips of water to help rinse your beverage from your teeth
  • Have a glass of water after you’ve finished your drink

Remember, staying hydrated is essential to surviving the heat this summer, but be sure to pay attention to what you’re drinking so you can protect your teeth, too!
